Tips, tricks and modifications
What to rim a gin espresso martini with.
The best rim for a gin espresso martini in my opinion is dark chocolate and coffee grounds. This combination gives a nice bittersweet taste. It pairs extremely well with the tanginess of the martini. However, if you are looking for a different combination, here are a few more options:
- Chocolate syrup and chocolate curls
- White chocolate and coffee grounds
- Dark chocolate and cocoa powder
What brand of alcohol is best.
You really don't need to break the bank on this, if you don't want to! My go to's for the gin and vermouth in this recipe are: Tanqueray Gin and Martini & Rossi Extra Dry Vermouth. Both are pretty budget friendly while still lending a great tasting martini.
How to make cocktail foam.
Shaking the cocktail vigorously in the shaker will create a foamy top. This is created from the cream in the recipe. If you don't use cream, you may not end up with that frothy top to your espresso martini.
DIY cocktail shaker.
If you don't have a cocktail shaker handy, here are some ways to make one yourself.
- Use a mason jar
- Two cup shaker: Place a smaller cup into the top of a larger cup (plastic or metal works best)
Remember to strain while pouring. We don't want any ice in our martini!

Notes
Step-by-step instructions [with pictures]: How to make an espresso martini with gin.
Step 1:
Place the chocolate and cream in a microwave safe container and microwave for 20 seconds at a time until completely melted. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate! Pour the melted chocolate onto a plate. On a separate plate pour some raw coffee grounds onto the plate. Dip the rim of a clean martini glass into the melted chocolate and then the raw coffee grounds to coat the rim of the glass. Set the glass aside.
Step 2:
In a cocktail shaker fill with one cup of ice. Pour in the gin, vermouth, creme de cacao, espresso, cream and brown sugar. Place the lid and cap of the cocktail shaker securely onto the top and begin shaking up and down vigorously.
Step 3:
After shaking for 15-25 seconds, remove the small cap at the top of the shaker to reveal the strainer and strain the liquid out into your prepared martini glass. If you are using a cocktail shaker that doesn't have a cap you'll need to use a cocktail strainer.
Step 4:
There will be some foam left in the shaker cup, use a spoon to scoop some of the foam onto the top of your martini. Top with some shredded chocolate or more coffee grounds. Whatever floats your boat!
